Topic 1.3: European Explorations, Colonization, and Impact
The people of the Eastern Woodlands were the first Natives
to encounter European settlers in North America. This encounter would impact
their culture. At first, Natives traded
furs and deerskins with Europeans for iron tools, weapons, and guns. As the
settlers became more prosperous and numerous, they took over more Native
peoples’ lands, cheated them in trade, and forced some Natives into slavery,
leading to hostilities between the settlers and the people of the Eastern
Woodlands nations. Let’s step back and
take a look at European exploration, colonization, and their impact on the
Natives and the land.
